Blog Entry #1: Cheek to Cheek with Edie McClurgh

We didn't have room on the new site for this one - so here it is ...

cheek to cheek...with Edie McClurg
Because she played Grace, Ed Rooney's ditsy secretary in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and she's starred in a bunch of kick ass '80s and early '90s movies and TV shows... it's time to go "Cheek to Cheek" with Edie McClurg!
By Jon Chattman, for thecheappop.com 2005

JC: What have you been up to?
EM: Just in the past few weeks I've played a tiny squirrel on Disney Channel "Higglytown Heroes" (it's a regular role), a 100-year old Scottish woman and a parrot in an animation of the Holly Hobby book about Christmas (DVD available Christmas 2006), a Dame Edna type to promote CBS Network Thanksgiving programs. I also have recorded my role for the new PIXAR film "Cars" in which I play a midwestern mini-van. Very fun and it will be great when it hits the theatres in 2006. And I didn't have to do hair, makeup, or costuming. The theatre of the mind on radio is a lot of fun because everyone can imagine what the character looks like.I started my performing career on National Public Radio affiliate KCUR-FM in Kansas City,Missouri. I was a classical music DJ, news anchor, and feature and documentary producer for NPR network.

JC: Getting back to your earlier work, what are you recognized for the most?
EM: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and The Hogan Family.
JC: Speaking of Ferris, what was that like to work on? Did you adlib at all? Oh, and since this is a loaded question, where is John Hughes?
EM: When I auditioned for Ferris I added a line "They think he's a righteous dude!" because I thought it would sound funny with the Chicago accent. It was funny and John Hughes
laughed. I got the job. Sometimes I improvise in auditions or on camera while shooting because I choose my spots and make it fit with the writing. I improvised in "Planes,
Trains" with the whole Thanksgiving riff. Also in "She's Having a Baby": the impetigo riff and with Larry Hankin, playing my husband: "You BURNED the dog!" I also improvised a
lot in "A River Runs Through It" for Robert Redford. He got to trusting me to add the "noise of life" to the family scenes where I played Emily Lloyd's mother. John Hughes is producing and lives in the Chicago area.

JC: What was your favorite fad of 1980s and why?
EM: I never really got into fads except to satirize them. I do remember getting a giant pair of platform shoes at a thrift store and wearing them as "Dacy Stevens" a girl from
Hollywood High. I did monologues in Groundling Shows and was hired for the "Tony Orlando and Dawn Rainbow Hour" (it was the show's last season) Dacy appeared a couple of times on Tony's show; but we were on in the early evening so my content was homogenized and I was disappointed by the censorship.

JC: Lastly, what projects are you currently working on?
EM: I play the voice of Fran the Squirrel on Disney Channel animated show, "Higglytown Heroes" for pre-school audiences. This past season I appeared as an Adult Baby
Fetish Store Owner on "CSI", a woman arguing with Kirstie Alley in "Fat Actress", And have finished a lovely film in North Carolina "Mountain Time" which should be released in
2006. I play the nurse in a small town clinic and teach the big city doctor how life works when your tiny community becomes your "family". It is a true story and I have a big part in it.
